Thread: food allergy vs. food intolerance testing

Posted by Dawn, 15th July, 2011:  My son was recently tested for food allergies using a blood spot test procedure which looked for the level of IgG antibodies through spectrophometric analysis (hope I explained that correctly!).  The MD we visited practices functional medicine and bases his practice on the philosophy of identifying and treating the cause, not just symptoms.  My question is how does this test method compare to the blood test methods used at Windrose to test for food intolerances?  I don't understand the similarities/differences in methodology and results.

Posted by Sandra Strom, CEO of Song of HealthMy apologies for overlooking your thread posted in this category; as our doctors are no longer able to answer questions due to their overbooked schedules, I neglected to find this thread until just now.

I am not qualified to answer your question. I have forwarded it to Dr. Tish in the event that she may have time to delve into this subject.

As a note of information, at this time Windrose Clinic is using Dr. Carroll’s original method of evaluating for food intolerances that does not require taking blood samples from their patients.  In health,
Sandra

UNDER THE CATEGORY Food Questions

Thread:  Maple sugar, Almonds and cashews

Posted by Traci, 5th August, 2011:  Hi Sandra, you have the same intolerances as I do.  What brand of Maple sugar do you use?  And can you please tell me where you get it; also where do you get your cashews and almonds?  I did find some on the food list; just wondered what you prefer.  It seems that Azure Standard used to have maple sugar that was ok, but is not on the list anymore.  Thank You. Traci

Posted by Sandra, CEO of SOHHello Traci, I don't use maple sugar.  I do use maple syrup all the time, as well as honey and agave.  (As a reminder to our subscribers, my food intolerances are potato and fruit/sugar combo.)  The brands of maple syrup that I generally use are Coombs Family, NOW, and Maple Grove, all organic, depending on which of those are available at the stores I shop.  Two of those are on our Food Resource List.  Aunt Patty's Organic Maple Sugar is neutral, so that would be a good choice if you want to use the sugar form instead.  For me, it's what I’ve gotten used to cooking/baking with and what I can get for less $$.

I buy my nuts and cashews from 2 different stores, and buy them in raw form.  One is in Astoria, OR., a coop that sells organic products in bulk.  The other is a natural foods store in Longview, WA. (also organic).  I believe one of the brands is NOW, not sure of the others, but I do well with them so they must be "clean." Remember that cashews are a fruit. NOW Certified Organic Whole Raw Cashews are on our list as just fruit.

Dr. Tish and Potenza have furnished us a number of products that they've evaluated in recent months/years that are on our Food Resource List.  Hopefully, a store near you may carry good products for you.

If you need further help locating a product, just let me know.  Glad to help!  In health,
Sandra

FOOD LABEL QUIZ

CAN YOU GUESS THE FOOD CATEGORIES OF INGREDIENTS
LISTED ON THIS LABEL?

The following list of ingredients is on a label from a recent product that is in the MAY 2011 Food Resource List updates:

INGREDIENTS: Tomatoes, Tomato Juice, Salt, Dehydrated Garlic, Oregano, Basil, Thyme, Calcium Chloride, Citric Acid.

As part of my goal to help you in the quest of eating safely in accordance with your personal food intolerances, this section is another way to help you identify suspicious ingredients and … HAVE SOME FUN!

* First, identify obvious food categories, i.e. potato starch = potato.
* Next, identify potential hidden ingredients, i.e. guar gum = potato.
* Finally, if you can answer this, you are exceptionally brilliant:  What product is this?

The answers are on Page 11, at the bottom of the New Recipes section, just above The Food Resource List Updates.        ~~~

Each month we bring you articles on a myriad of topics regarding health and environmental issues. The main focus of Song of Health is to avail you of expert information on the Carroll Food Intolerance dietary methods. This is the first step to getting and staying well. We feel, however, that there are also many other interesting and important issues to be aware of. It is our goal to share, with you, our findings on what may have a cause and effect on our healthy lives.

ENVIRONMENTAL UPDATES FROM THE U.S.EPA

I am subscribed to receive updates to environmental and health policies from the Environmental Protection Agency.  Each month I will select those I feel are pertinent to share with you, and bring to your attention.  Sandra

July 26, 2011
EPA Considering New Toxicity Testing and Environmental Sampling for BPA
WASHINGTON – Following a BPA Action Plan announced in March 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is requesting public comment on possible toxicity testing and environmental sampling to study BPA’s potential environmental impacts. BPA has been shown to cause reproductive and developmental effects in animal studies. This action is part of Administrator Lisa P. Jackson’s comprehensive effort to strengthen EPA’s chemical management program and assure the safety of chemicals that Americans encounter in their daily lives.

BPA is used in the manufacture of a wide range of consumer and industrial products including food-can liners, hard polycarbonate plastics, epoxy paints and coatings, and thermal papers, including some cash register receipts. Releases of BPA to the environment exceed 1 million pounds per year.

“A number of concerns have been raised about the potential human health and environmental effects of BPA,” said Steve Owens, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. “The data collected under the testing EPA is considering would help EPA better understand and address the potential environmental impacts of BPA.”

In January 2010 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it would further examine potential human health effects and reduce exposure to BPA in the food supply, which represents the greatest source of exposure to people. EPA is working with FDA, Centers for Disease Control, and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences on research under way to better determine and evaluate the potential health consequences of BPA exposures. At the conclusion of that research, EPA will determine if additional actions may be needed to address human health concerns from non-food use exposures.

EPA issued an action plan on BPA in March 2010 outlining possible steps the agency might take to address risks presented by BPA, including the testing discussed in today’s announcement. EPA’s BPA action plan is available at http://www.epa.gov/oppt/existingchemicals/pubs/actionplans/bpa.html.

Comments on the Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) must be received on or before September 26, 2011. The ANPR and supporting information can be found in docket number EPA-HQ-OPPT-2010-0812 on the Federal eRulemaking Portal, http://www.regulations.gov.

ARTICLE:

PURSLANE – WEED OR WONDER PLANT?
By Sandra Strom, CEO of Song of Health

Is it a weed?  Is it a treat?  Wait, it’s both…It’s super weed!

Portulaca oleracea - Purslane - (also called Verdolaga, Pigweed, Little Hogweed, or Pusley) is often considered a prolific unwanted weed in the United States, yet in other countries its true value as a yummy and healthful plant is no secret.

Although slow to reap value in the U.S., in recent years purslane has earned its reward as the vegetarian answer to being the richest source of Omega-3 fatty acids of any green, leafy vegetable - specifically, alpha linolenic acid; and contains an extraordinary amount of EPA (eicosapentanoic acid), an Omega-3 fatty acid found mostly in fish, some algae, and flax seeds. This potency is rare for a plant source of fatty acids.  In addition, being naturally high in magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium, and iron, purslane also contains vitamin A, vitamin C, some vitamin B and carotenoids, and the dietary minerals magnesium, calcium, potassium, and iron.  Wait…that’s not all!  Also present are two types of betalain alkaloid pigments, which are potent antioxidants.  100grams of fresh purslane leaves (about 1 cup) contain 300 to 400mg. of alpha-linolenic acid.  One cup of cooked leaves contains 90mg. of calcium, 561mg. of potassium, and more than 2,000 IUs of vitamin A. 1

Historically, some European cultures administered purslane to remedy arthritis and inflammation.  Chinese herbalists found similar benefits, using it in respiratory and circulatory function.  In recent research times, there is also evidence that the omega 3 fatty acids may lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, among other benefits.

Known as Ma Chi Xian in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it has been used to treat dysentery and other infections, and applied topically to skin sores, insect and snake bites. 2

WHERE IS PURSLANE FOUND AND HOW DO WE RECOGNIZE IT?

Some references claim that purslane is native to India and Persia, while others note this annual succulent’s old-world distribution extended from North Africa, throughout the Middle East and Indian Subcontinent to Malesia and Australasia.  There is evidence that species in the New World was found in Ontario from 1430 AD.  In India, purslane is known as Sanhti, Punarva, or Kulfa

With succulent leaves and stems with yellow flowers that lay flat along the ground and radiate from a single taproot, purslane is draught tolerant and will grow just about anywhere.  Preferring fertile garden soils, it also possesses the ability to grow in sidewalk cracks!  It germinates best in soil temperatures of 90 degrees and no deeper than ½ inch.  As an annual, it reproduces from its black seeds and stem pieces. Its seeds have been documented as viable for 40 years in the soil.  Preferring hot weather, it is also tolerant to freeze.

Purslane provides ground cover to create a humid microclimate for nearby plants, making it a great companion plant for stabilizing ground moisture.  Its roots go deep, bringing up moisture and nutrients that not only it uses for its own benefit, but for those plants around it.  For some plants such as corn, purslane’s roots will “dig a path” in hard soils, allowing the other plants to follow the easy route.

CULINARY PROPERTIES OF PURSLANE: HOW DO I COOK IT? WHAT DO I PUT IT IN?

With a mild lemony flavor and fleshy texture, purslane may be eaten raw or cooked.  It is a fine addition chopped in salads and compliments tomatoes and cucumbers.  Its salty, sour, zesty flavor pairs well with fresh cheeses, such as mozzarella and cottage.  It is most desirable raw as fresh young plants – young leaves and tender stem tips; touted as tasting similar to watercress or spinach.  It can be used in sandwiches as a substitute for lettuce or pickles, and can be substituted in dishes calling for spinach, wild greens, lettuces, or pickles.

Older purslane leaves can be steamed, stir-fried, and pureed; added to soups, stews, vegetable dishes, and salsas.  It goes well with citrus and melon, compliments pork and fish, and enhances beans and lentils.  Be careful not to overcook, as it can become a bit slimy.  In Mexico it is called Verdolaga and is eaten in omelets, as a side dish, rolled in tortillas, or dropped by handfuls into soups and stews.  In Russia, purslane is dried and canned for winter.

The seeds are also edible too.  I have read where ancient Greeks made a bread flour from the seeds.  Beyond that, I’m still looking for ways to use them in foods!

and tomatoes

As purslane’s popularity continues to increase, it will be easier to find sources for purchasing.  Different varieties may be found in farmers’ markets and specialty stores; it may even be found in some super markets.

What an amazing plant!  Let’s turn the “weed” reputation of this plant around and honor it for all the gifts it presents us.

A REVIEW OF VALUE OR RISK
OF IMMUNIZATION METHODS

By Sandra Strom, CEO of Song of Health

In just a couple weeks, for some it’s here already, school begins.  Along with new clothes, pencils, and paper, we are faced with the decision of whether to immunize the young children with all of the shots prescribed by the American Medical Association, or whether to take a different route.  Often, schools require immunization, or a darn good written reason why you insist on taking a different route.  The pressure to immunize becomes a strong community insistence; yet, how often have we proven ourselves wise by refusing to follow the medically beaten path?  The determination for immunization the conventional way is a serious consideration that must not be taken lightly.

First, if we accept being responsible adults, we must educate ourselves of the pros, cons, benefits, and potential side effects of different immunizations.  Recently, Dr. Tish forwarded me an email with a link to a provocative and informational article called “The Truth About The Flu Vaccine,” by Dr. Scott Watier.  Click on the link to see the article.  He discusses sobering, disturbing issues of complications from flu shots, as well as the questionable effectiveness of one flu serum for other strains.

After reading Dr. Watier’s article, I suggest you then review Dr. Tish’s article in the September 2009 issue of Dragonfly News, "A Naturopathic View of Flu Prevention," in which she discusses the safe Naturopathic alternative options to flu shots.

Although both these articles focus on influenza vaccinations, the controversy extends to other types of immunizations.  Please do your family a huge service and discuss your protective options with your Naturopathic physician before falling into the common pattern of blindly allowing administering of vaccines.

REMINDER: IMPORTANT!  Per the request of Dr. Zeff, we will continue to print this message in every newsletter from now on. It is an important issue that we believe needs to always be addressed:

On occasion, a Subscriber will ask our doctors a food intolerance question and their responses will slightly differ.  This has sometimes caused confusion and has been expressed directly to one of our doctors by several patients.

Per our doctors: “…most likely, we are not evaluating foods for, e.g., potato content.  We are evaluating a food for a person with a known potato intolerance…”  Results for one patient to a food can vary from another patient, even though they are intolerant to the same food category.  So, one doctor may determine a different result than any of the other doctors who competently perform this analysis, because they are evaluating for a patient’s specificity to a specific food sample.  “It is one of the peculiarities of the methodology.”

For this reason, we constantly emphasize throughout the Song of Health website that the information found on the website is a guide only.   If you have any personal issues with a product, in other words, an evaluation shows that a food should be OK for you to eat, yet you have a reaction to it anyway, we suggest you refrain from consuming it until you have it evaluated for you personally.

Always, always, always consult your physician with any medical issues you may be experiencing, any drugs you have questions about, or your medical care.  Our purpose is to help you to determine what foods are included in food intolerance categories.  All other information, including articles, are for educational purposes and is not meant to replace your doctor’s care for you.  We are set up as a support team for doctor, patient and Subscriber.  There are many questions Song of Health can answer for you, and we encourage you to ask us first, in regards to food and food intolerances.  All other medical discussions should be directed to your physician.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact us.  We are here to support you and your efforts to claim and maintain great health by refraining from your food intolerances. In Health, Sandra Strom

HOW TO READ THE FOOD RESOURCE LIST AND USE THE KEY:

* As items are submitted and analyzed by our staff doctors, they are then added to the Food Resource List on the Song of Health website. We compile the updated lists to email to you as well.

* The items are listed per category.

* By listing the “Date Evaluated” you can be assured of the most recent updates.

* Under the “Evaluated For” column, “ALL” signifies that the product has been analyzed for all food categories included in the Carroll Food Intolerance Evaluation Method.

In some cases, you will see ingredients listed in the “Results” column that are ot included in “Evaluated For.” This is due to: 1) the ingredient has been listed on the packaging; 2) or it is obviously in the stated category; 3) or our doctors evaluated for more than what was asked for. For example, results for milk will be “dairy (D).”

* Under “Purchased At” we no longer furnish where the product was purchased; however, if the product was purchased outside the Pacific Northwest area, the region will be noted.  Sometimes, I will be able to locate a place to purchase a product for you, if requested.

FOOD RESOURCE LIST
AUGUST 2011

* No new updates this month, as of yet.  When new updates are available, they will be emailed to you and will be added to The Food Resource List.

* On a footnote…Windrose Clinic is currently addressing recent legal issues posed by the FDA, which supersedes state regulations, regarding license to use blood samples for the specific purpose of determining food intolerances.  Until determinations are made, which we are hoping will be soon, we most likely will not receive new food evaluations to determine hidden ingredients.

*  We highly recommend you contact your legislators to pressure the FDA to recognize the validity of this work and all that our Naturopaths succeed at in their efforts to help us heal.  This is an issue of politics, where groups with political and financial power work hard to discredit and, consequently, squelch practitioners of alternative healing methods; thus, directly causing minimization of what Naturopaths are allowed to do, even though they have proven their credibility and competence.

This is a very real step backwards for Naturopaths.  Our doctors have been struggling to convince all the states to license Naturopaths; now the licensed ones are dealing with serious regulatory re-structure.

We all thank you for your support.  In health, Sandra
