QUESTIONS ASKED AND ANSWERED

Email Correspondence:
S
ong of Health has been given permission by our Subscribers to share the following with you, so that we may all benefit.

From Claire G, Nov. 19thHello Sandra and Song of Health!  I would like to take psyllium powder but I am concerned that this is a grain. Do you know if it is a grain? If not, what category would it fall under?  Thanks very much for any information! Claire G

Reply from Sandra:  Hello Claire, thank you for your great patience while we waited for Dr. Tish to manage the time to evaluate psyllium for food intolerance categories. Good news...it is neutral. This includes grain, so you are safe to use it. Remember to read the ingredients of the container to be sure nothing else has been added.

From Dr. Christopher Kozura, Nov. 19th:  Include Licensed Naturopathic
Physicians as primary care providers in the Federal Healthcare Law (Ob

From Adrienne M, Nov. 21st:  It occurs to me that your readers would like to hear of my food intolerance to cactus, since it has just been identified as a new category. I stopped using aloe soap AND, finally, all soaps in public restrooms.  (I do it by carrying a tiny box of plain soap inmy purse.) RESULT: no more peeling cuticles producing ugly hang-nails.

I am now enjoying fingernail polish and am amazed at how beautiful mynails andfingers look to me.  Oh, I'm enjoying being me.  I think I am having a delayed adolescence in which I am enjoying discovering myself as a beautiful creature.  Gosh, it's apparently never too late!

Thanks again for your huge commitment to the health of those of us on the planetwho need your support.  You wonder if you are being read!   Love, Adrienne

From Adrienne, Dec. 15thDear Sandra,

yes, we have our soaps.  I had the courage to put a bar to my wet hair and create some suds.  My hair came out just fine.  I can scarcely believe it.  NowI need to track down the recipe for nettle-based conditioner--I bought the nettle!  All things in good time.  You gave me the instructions already.

I took the soaps to my appointment with Dr. Joshua Green this afternoon so that he could see what you are doing.  He loved seeing the product and he spoke lovingly of you.  I am in such good hands.

Thanks for all you do.  Love, Adrienne

Editor’s note:  Adrienne is referring to making a strong tea from the nettle leaves and using the tea as hair conditioner.

TO MAKE THE NETTLE HAIR TEAUsing fresh (best) or dried nettle leaves, place in pot with water.  Bring to a boil, then turn down to simmer for 15-20 minutes, until tea is quite dark.  Cool and place in containers.  To preserve, a couple drops of tea tree oil may be added.

From a fellow Subscriber, Dec. 14th:  Dear Sandra, do you know of any clay (eatable, Bentonite) without fruits, please? Thank you very much.  Happy holidays.

Reply From Sandra:  May I ask, what form of clay are you looking for? In capsules, to use on foods, etc? Offhand, Betonite should be neutral; however, a product could be contaminated. We cannot tell you for sure without having you submit a product for evaluation. The clays I use in  soaps are neutral; I submitted samples for evaluation to be certain.

Subscriber:  Any form to take it internally (hopefully, would help with acid reflux).  Also, a clay for bath in powder form.  But mainly need one that can be eaten (capsule, powder, liquid, anything). Thank you.

Sandra:  I've had to do some research on your question, and I have also referred it to Dr. Tish, as I trust her advice beyond what I can find on the internet. When I hear from her I will pass the information on to you.

First, my concern is your acid reflux condition. Our first and most important recommendation is to contact your Naturopathic physician to help determine what is causing the problem and what they recommend to help you resolve the issue. Have you done that and did they recommend the clay? Second, are you staying completely away from your food intolerances? That is the first step in reducing digestive complications.

With that said, and waiting on Dr. Tish's response, I have found a couple of websites for you to look at that discuss taking clay, and they sell products. The websites are
http://www.frenchclayforall.com/products.html
http://www.hullisticmarket.com/supplements/french_green_clay
http://www.clayremedies.com/
Amazon.com sells a Montmorillonite French Green Clay product: http://www.amazon.com/Terramin-Natural-Multimineral-Supplement-Montmorillonite/dp/B001AV9W8O/ref=sr_1_fed1_1?ie=UTF8&qid
=1355858133&sr=8-1&keywords=montmorillonite+clay

Also, Now has a Betonite clay product that can be purchased in most natural food stores that sell their products.

I want to emphasize again, that we do not recommend you take any supplements without contacting your physician first. They will tell you what dosages to take, and they may also prefer to prescribe something else for your condition.  Hope that helps.  In health, Sandra

Reply From Dr. Tish:  I don't know of an edible green clay. If [you] want it for gut detox, we use botanicals for that.

From Karen, Dec. 18thTried the Heartfelt [ soap] tonight. I LOVE it. Used it also as a shampoo.  Thank you!!! Karen

~ Each month we bring you articles on a myriad of topics regarding health and environmental issues. The main focus of Song of Health is to avail you of expert information on the Carroll Food Intolerance dietary methods.  This – DIET - is the first step to getting and staying well.  We feel there are also many other interesting and important issues to be aware of, so we share our findings with you, on what may have a cause and effect on our health and lives.  This month

ENVIRONMENTAL UPDATES FROM THE U.S. EPA:
I am subscribed to receive updates to environmental and health policies from the Environmental Protection Agency. Each month I will select those I feel are pertinent to share with you, and bring to your attention. Sandra

EPA & Consumer Product Safety Commission Collaborate to Research Health Impacts of Nanomaterials
WASHINGTON, DC
—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) are collaborating in a worldwide research effort to assess any potential impacts of nanomaterials on people’s health and the environment. Nanomaterials appear in many household products ranging from clothing to building materials. For example, one ongoing study evaluates the potential human and environmental effects from exposure to copper nanomaterials, an ingredient in wood treatment products used on wood for building decks and fences.

The emerging field of nanotechnology has led to substantial advances in energy, medicine, electronics, and clean technologies. The field relies on using materials at the nanoscale level, these nanomaterials are made up of very small particles, which are about 100,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair. Because of the unique properties of these materials, it is important to conduct research to identify methods that will allow manufacturers and other stakeholders to ensure that products containing these materials do not harm people or the environment.

“Nanotechnology and nanomaterials used in the development of these products improve our everyday lives, but it is important that we understand how humans are exposed to nanomaterials and to assess the risks they may pose to people’s health and the environment,” said Dr. Tina Bahadori, national program director for EPA’s Chemical Safety for Sustainability Research. “This innovative research greatly improves what is known about nanomaterials and will inform the future design of more sustainable, effective nanomaterials.”

“These tiny nanomaterials are widely used in products ranging from clothing to sunscreen, but the need for additional research and knowledge on how they affect consumers is great. The CPSC staff is working diligently to meet the challenges involved in regulating this emerging technology and is pleased to be collaborating with staff at EPA to develop test methods and exposure data to adequately address health and safety concerns” said Dr. Treye Thomas, program manager for the CPSC Nanotechnology program.

EPA's collaborative research with CSPC is part of a larger international effort that focuses on:
• Identifying, characterizing and quantifying the origins of nanomaterials

• Studying biological processes affected by nanomaterials that could influence risk
• Determining how nanomaterials interact with complex systems in the human body and the environment
• Involving industry to develop sustainable manufacturing processes
• Sharing knowledge through innovative online applications that allow for rapid feedback and accelerated research progress

CPSC, in working with other federal agencies, ensures that common public health concerns are met and will use research findings to inform:
• Protocol development to assess the potential release of nanomaterials from consumer products

• Credible rules for consumer product testing to evaluate exposure
• Determination of the potential public health impacts of nanomaterial used in consumer products

This research is a part of the U.S. government’s efforts to assess the potential risks of nanomaterials. These efforts are coordinated by the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI). NNI is a collaborative project comprised of 25 agencies, including EPA and CPSC.

World Health Officials Question Safety of Magnesium Stearate
The Joint Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Health Organization (FAO/WHO) Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) have recently made the determination to investigate whether or not the use of magnesium stearate is safe. JECFA, as part of the international Codex Alimentarius Commission's effort to harmonize the food and supplement regulations of member countries, is evaluating data on food additives, and it has found some gaps in the existing data on magnesium stearate.

Magnesium stearate is the most commonly used excipient in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements. Magnesium stearate in powder form is used as a flowing agent - when it is added to another powder magnesium stearate changes the physical characteristics of the combined powder such that it flows easier. This makes the manufacturing process of pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements much more efficient - and less costly.

Although magnesium stearate has been widely used for decades, there is only minimal data to support its safety and toxicology. Thorne Research is not saying magnesium stearate is unsafe; however, without adequate toxicology and safety data, pharmaceutical and dietary supplement manufacturers doing business in Europe might be forced to stop using it if JECFA takes action against it.

During its entire existence of 28 years, Thorne Research has manufactured the highest quality dietary supplements WITHOUT using magnesium stearate. Not because it is unsafe, but because it is unnecessary, AND, because magnesium stearate can significantly affect the physical characteristics of any powdered nutrient to which it is added.

For a manufacturer, the addition of magnesium stearate is a good thing, because it makes their production processes that much more efficient. However, Thorne Research has determined that adding even a small amount of magnesium stearate (as little as one percent) can significantly decrease nutrient dissolution. What does this mean? A powder that is 99-percent nutrient content and one-percent magnesium stearate content has a much lower propensity to dissolve in solution than does a 100-percent nutrient content of that same powder without magnesium stearate.

In one unpublished study, the addition of only one-percent magnesium stearate to pure ascorbic acid powder reduced the dissolution of the combined powdered mixture at one hour's time by 65 percent (see the chart below). Can this affect absorption in the body? Thorne Research believes that it does. At the very least, we believe it makes absorption of the nutrient unpredictable.

Notwithstanding the recent JECFA admission on magnesium stearate's safety profile, Thorne Research's position on magnesium stearate will remain what it has always been: it is an unnecessary additive and it offers no benefit whatsoever to the patient. Using magnesium stearate simply makes it easier for the manufacturer to make the product. Thorne Research has been manufacturing its dietary supplements for 28 years without using magnesium stearate. Whatever action JECFA might take regarding magnesium stearate, JECFA's action will have no impact on Thorne Research because Thorne Research has never used magnesium stearate - and we never will.

SHARING EXPERIENCES:

Remember that eating our food intolerances can have a dramatic effect on our moods as well as other symptoms we discuss, ad infinitum. .

COUNTING MY BLESSINGS
By Sandra Strom, CEO of Song of Health

It is a natural phenomenon, at this celebratory time of the year, to show generosity beyond normalcy.  No matter what the motive may be that spurs us to think of others, we go beyond the everyday casual thought to show how much we care.

This time of year affords me the fantasy of the Winter Magic ~ the spellbinding lights; the fresh forest scent of the trees; the varied traditions delivered to the next generation to continue the rituals, and the tempting treats whose wondrous smells waft from the kitchen.  (Mine are made with non-refined, no sugar ingredients, of course!)  Oh dear, the treats…undoubtedly, this is the most difficult time of the year for being observant to our good diets.

This may also be a time of sentimental journey for some of us.  For me it is double whammy, as my birthday also occurs at the end of the year.  The saturnine nature of the Capricorn kicks into major time of reflection ~ what went right, where did I miss the mark, what do I want to forget, what do I think is worth continuing?  Throughout the year I find myself questioning if the work I do is actually valuable; does anyone out there really care?  Then, at the most opportune moments, when I need you more than you need me, I receive correspondence from one of you.  A question is posted in The Forum; an email requesting information or maybe just support is sent directly to me; a note of appreciation --- my spirits are lifted!  Not because you’re in need; rather, because I may be able to offer you a solution that hopefully helps.  Our health is serious business and I hold it in the highest esteem as the first and immediate condition to be addressed.  So much of how our days go for us depends on how we feel, not to mention the cost of getting sick on so many levels.

As you are aware, this past year I was guided to add a product through Song of Health ~ all natural fruit-free soap.  The concept was sparked by a need for our fruit intolerant folks, whose success in finding a natural product they can use is next to zero.  With that as my basis, I then sought to make a food-intolerant free soap that would be safe for most of us.  Successful after much research and studying, soap was created, only to find out afterward that CACTUS is also a food intolerance category.  So, a new soap was added to the collection that is cactus-free, as well.

I never dreamed how quickly the popularity of the soap would occur.  I suddenly had to readjust how to fit priorities into the day, and what those were.  It was clear to me that my first priority must, and will always be your needs as a Subscriber of Song of Health.  I do my best to give you the information you need on a timely basis.  Often, your questions challenge my knowledge, and I’m slower in response than you or I prefer.  For this, I thank you for your patience; don’t give up on me!  Your needs are the most important to me; sometimes, I have to extend my research for you, and inquire to our Naturopath, Dr. Tish, who does her best to be prompt, but is oftentimes booked out herself.  Rest assured, being there for you is our passion, our purpose, our life’s work.  As humans, we will sometimes falter in meeting your expectations.  Yet, your inquiries create our greatest lessons to share.  Your participation at Song of Health is invaluable.  For this, I am truly grateful.  For this, I count my blessings.

From The Song of Health Team, may you experience joy and happiness at this special time.  May you be blessed with many wonderful gifts, the best ~ those least expected!

To All My Relations, Sandra

REMINDER: IMPORTANT!  Per the request of Dr. Zeff, we will continue to print this message in every newsletter from now on. It is an important issue that we believe needs to always be addressed:

On occasion, a Subscriber will ask our doctors a food intolerance question and their responses will slightly differ.  This has sometimes caused confusion and has been expressed directly to one of our doctors by several patients.

Per our doctors: “…most likely, we are not evaluating foods for, e.g., potato content.  We are evaluating a food for a person with a known potato intolerance…”  Results for one patient to a food can vary from another patient, even though they are intolerant to the same food category.  So, one doctor may determine a different result than any of the other doctors who competently perform this analysis, because they are evaluating for a patient’s specificity to a specific food sample.  “It is one of the peculiarities of the methodology.”

For this reason, we constantly emphasize throughout the Song of Health website that the information found on the website is a guide only.   If you have any personal issues with a product, in other words, an evaluation shows that a food should be OK for you to eat, yet you have a reaction to it anyway, we suggest you refrain from consuming it until you have it evaluated for you personally.

Always, always, always consult your physician with any medical issues you may be experiencing, any drugs you have questions about, or your medical care.  Our purpose is to help you to determine what foods are included in food intolerance categories.  All other information, including articles, are for educational purposes and is not meant to replace your doctor’s care for you.  We are set up as a support team for doctor, patient and Subscriber.  There are many questions Song of Health can answer for you, and we encourage you to ask us first, in regards to food and food intolerances.  All other medical discussions should be directed to your physician.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact us.  We are here to support you and your efforts to claim and maintain great health by refraining from your food intolerances. In Health, Sandra Strom

HOW TO READ THE FOOD RESOURCE LIST AND USE THE KEY:

* As items are submitted and analyzed by our staff doctors, they are then added to the Food Resource List on the Song of Health website. We compile the updated lists to email to you as well.

* The items are listed per category.

* By listing the “Date Evaluated” you can be assured of the most recent updates.

* Under the “Evaluated For” column, “ALL” signifies that the product has been analyzed for all food categories included in the Carroll Food Intolerance Evaluation Method.

In some cases, you will see ingredients listed in the “Results” column that are ot included in “Evaluated For.” This is due to: 1) the ingredient has been listed on the packaging; 2) or it is obviously in the stated category; 3) or our doctors evaluated for more than what was asked for. For example, results for milk will be “dairy (D).”

* Under “Purchased At” we no longer furnish where the product was purchased; however, if the product was purchased outside the Pacific Northwest area, the region will be noted.  Sometimes, I will be able to locate a place to purchase a product for you, if requested.
