QUESTIONS ASKED AND ANSWERED

Email Correspondence:

Song of Health has been given permission by our Subscribers whose names appear, to share the following with you, so that we may all benefit.  Some have chosen to stay completely anonymous, in which cases you’ll see the name as “Member” or initial.  Other Correspondence are emails received from outside our membership; however, we feel it is pertinent information to share with you.

From Norma R., Nov. 3rd:  Hi Sandra! I have a question regarding the nutritional yeast. The website [SOH Food Resource List] states a brand of nutritional yeast that doesn't contain potato: Red Star? I'm so paranoid about products that contains the word yeast. I don't eat meat, chicken, pork; but do eat fish. I would like to try the nutritional yeast for the health benefits but like I say: I'm paranoid. Thanks, Norma

Reply from Sandra:  Good morning Norma,
Nutritional yeast was originally a by-product of beer. It is almost always started from sugar (molasses) nowadays, as far as I am aware. I called the Red Star company a number of years ago to inquire what the starter was for their product, and it was molasses. Nutritional yeast is supposed to be high in amino acids and some B vitamins. I stopped using it for myself years ago due to the sugar, but used to sprinkle it on my cats' food when they were alive. It helped to keep them free from flees due to the B vitamins that permeated through their skin! What health benefits are you looking to derive from nutritional yeast? I'm sure we can find something else if you don't feel safe using Red Star brand. Another brand on the list that doesn't include potato is Maxi Nutritional Yeast. Both these products have not been evaluated since 2011, so I can't guarantee if the hidden ingredients have changed.

The only way you can know for sure what a product contains is to have it evaluated, as you have discovered first hand. Unfortunately, we get to learn how to roll with the punches of change, but sometimes it occurs in our favor!

From Christina, Nov. 9th:  In the food resource list, if a food has a letter next to it, does that mean that food has the item in it?

Reply from Sandra:  Yes Christina, that is correct. Note, the basic groups are represented. The other minor groupings (i.e., lavender/rosemary) aren't listed. If you have any questions about it, please feel free to ask!

Christina:  Thanks.  I don't see Phillips Lump Crab Meat on the list. The ingredients say crab meat, sodium and acid pyrophosphate (to prevent the formation of struvite crystals). Any red flags with this last ingredient?

Sandra:  Sodium pyrophosphate is a chemical produced from sodium carbonate and phosphoric acid.  Without actually evaluating the specific product, I would only be guessing as to what hidden ingredients this may contain.  Sodium pyrophosphate may also be used to help in a leavening agent such as baking powder. Such products often contain potato.

Additional input from Dr. Tish: The sodium pyrophosphate is a chemical. I don't know how it rests but I don't think it bothers people much.

THANKSGIVING MESSAGE 2016
By Sandra Strom, CEO of Song of Health

As we approach the holidays, I find this a good time to share important thoughts and changes with you.  First, as you have no doubt noticed, fewer newsletters have been published this past year.  It is NOT because my interest or care has lessened!  Life’s circumstances have added additional challenges, namely that I am now responsible for my elderly parents ~ their well-being and safety and all of their affairs that they are no longer able to handle themselves.  So now, I am responsible for two households!  Please understand that I am not making excuses.  I truly am doing my best to serve you while meeting responsibilities that I’ve been charged with.  To compensate for the changes and to be what I consider only fair to you, I have thus reduced the cost of your SOH Membership renewal to $139.95/year (less if 2 or more years are ordered).  Also understand, if important information comes up that you should be aware of immediately, I will post it on the Members home page on the website and email to you, as well.

THANKSGIVING DINNER SUGGESTIONS:

If you’ve been following your food intolerance diets for a long time, then the holiday season should have become much easier for you by now.  If you are new to the challenges of the “big meal”, then hopefully I can help make things easier for you.

  • Remember to check the Food Substitutions Page to adjust recipes easily.  For example, if you must avoid egg, the page offers 9 variations of substitutes.
  • Dressing (stuffing) can be a challenge for a variety of reasons.  You may not be able to have yeast bread (potato or sugar).  Use homemade corn bread (also gluten-free), biscuits, rice, wild rice, or vegetables to make a delicious dish.  My favorite method for cooking dressing is in a crock-pot.  It turns out wonderfully moist!  Check the Recipes section for suggestions.
  • Yuca root, fleshy winter squash such as butternut or sweet meat, or mashed cauliflower are yummy substitutes for potatoes.
  • Fruit intolerant?  Pumpkins are fruit-free, and pumpkin pie flavored with ground ginger is the treat of the season!  Tangy rhubarb sauce can be a nice replacement for cranberry sauce.
  • If you need to avoid pie crust, you can make a delicious pie without it.  Especially good is pumpkin pie and other custard-type fillings.
  • I don’t eat land meat, so I enjoy fresh salmon, if available, which is the honored delectable of the Pacific Northwest!  There is generally so much available on the holiday table, including fresh green or vegetable salad, that I don’t miss having that high protein dish when not there.
Whatever you serve, be assured ~ there will be plenty to eat even if a certain traditional food isn’t served in the “traditional” way.  Enjoy yourself with family and friends, and by all means...do not stress!  Remember the meaning of Thanksgiving and what the original meals signified, as shown in this newsletter’s picture.  It was a time of feast after the summer and fall harvests, of that which was grown and gathered from the local grounds, and shared with family and neighbors of all backgrounds and ethnicity.  In this age of uncertainty and concern, it is good to remember the tradition of these American roots!

From The Song of Health Team, we wish you a very blessed Thanksgiving season!

To All My Relations, Sandra and The Song of Health Team

Wasn’t that fun?  How did you do?

I personally do not recommend any prepared foods of this nature.  No viable nutrition, contains hidden ingredients, just plain bad for us!  This is a great example of what NOT to eat!  For quick, easy, and great biscuit recipes go to THE FOOD INTOLERANCE COOKBOOK  (RECIPES section), BISCUITS, BREADS AND CRACKERS.

REMINDER: IMPORTANT!  Per the request of Dr. Zeff, we will continue to print this message in every newsletter from now on. It is an important issue that we believe needs to always be addressed:

On occasion, a Subscriber will ask our doctors a food intolerance question and their responses will slightly differ.  This has sometimes caused confusion and has been expressed directly to one of our doctors by several patients.

Per our doctors: “…most likely, we are not evaluating foods for, e.g., potato content.  We are evaluating a food for a person with a known potato intolerance…”  Results for one patient to a food can vary from another patient, even though they are intolerant to the same food category.  So, one doctor may determine a different result than any of the other doctors who competently perform this analysis, because they are evaluating for a patient’s specificity to a specific food sample.  “It is one of the peculiarities of the methodology.”

For this reason, we constantly emphasize throughout the Song of Health website that the information found on the website is a guide only.   If you have any personal issues with a product, in other words, an evaluation shows that a food should be OK for you to eat, yet you have a reaction to it anyway, we suggest you refrain from consuming it until you have it evaluated for you personally.

Always, always, always consult your physician with any medical issues you may be experiencing, any drugs you have questions about, or your medical care.  Our purpose is to help you to determine what foods are included in food intolerance categories.  All other information, including articles, are for educational purposes and is not meant to replace your doctor’s care for you.  We are set up as a support team for doctor, patient and Subscriber.  There are many questions Song of Health can answer for you, and we encourage you to ask us first, in regards to food and food intolerances.  All other medical discussions should be directed to your physician.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact us.  We are here to support you and your efforts to claim and maintain great health by refraining from your food intolerances. In Health, Sandra Strom

HOW TO READ THE FOOD RESOURCE LIST AND USE THE KEY:

* As items are submitted and analyzed by our staff doctors, they are then added to the Food Resource List on the Song of Health website. We compile the updated lists to email to you as well.

* The items are listed per category.

* By listing the “Date Evaluated” you can be assured of the most recent updates.

* Under the “Evaluated For” column, “ALL” signifies that the product has been analyzed for all food categories included in the Carroll Food Intolerance Evaluation Method.

In some cases, you will see ingredients listed in the “Results” column that are ot included in “Evaluated For.” This is due to: 1) the ingredient has been listed on the packaging; 2) or it is obviously in the stated category; 3) or our doctors evaluated for more than what was asked for. For example, results for milk will be “dairy (D).”

* Under “Purchased At” we no longer furnish where the product was purchased; however, if the product was purchased outside the Pacific Northwest area, the region will be noted.  Sometimes, I will be able to locate a place to purchase a product for you, if requested.

If you have any questions, please contact us at:
