QUESTIONS ASKED AND ANSWERED

Email Correspondence:

Song of Health has been given permission by our Subscribers whose names appear, to share the following with you, so that we may all benefit.  Some have chosen to stay completely anonymous, in which cases you’ll see the name as “Member” or initial.  Other correspondence has been received from outside our membership; however, we feel it is pertinent information to share with you.

This is from a conversation with a fellow Sustainable Soapers Guild member, in regards to packaging with wood cellulose cello bags.  I thought it would be of value to you:

Sandra, Oct. 3rd:  Beautiful! Nice touch.  I can't use the cello bags.  Had my Naturopath evaluate them for any food intolerance ingredients. They resulted positive for potato, which is a major food intolerance.  But at least you know it's a natural resource!  I like your look - artisan professional with the homemade touch.

Jennifer:  Sandra, I'm curious, though the bags aren't intended for ingestion, they're still a concern?

Sandra:  Hi Jennifer, yes the ingredients in the bag can leech into the soap, as it is in direct contact and, generally, for a period of time. I had her evaluate the If You Care parchment paper and it is neutral, so that is what I use to wrap the soaps.  Although a couple stores carry my soap, I market mainly to my own clients and to my doctor's Naturopathic Clinic; they are all counting on me to have a perfectly safe product for them, so I have to take exceptional precautions. When I'm making or working with soap, I wash my hands with my Cactus-Free Unscented to be safe.

P.S.  One thing I've found interesting is that I have a friend who is intolerant to chocolate, yet she loves my soap and has no problems with it even though the main ingredient is pure prime-pressed cocoa butter.  Food intolerances, sensitivities, allergies --- so many!  And more continue to be identified, such as the Lavender/Rosemary/Jasmine group.  My main goal was to make fruit-free soap for the many fruit-intolerants; it just so happens it worked out there's one or another of the soaps most people can have.  Exhausting, eh?!

OTHER COMMUNICATIONS

From Environmental Working Group, Sept. 24th: Dear Sandra, ever wonder how much seafood you should be eating?

The truth is, there’s no universal answer. The amount of mercury a person can handle differs largely based on an individual’s age, weight, pregnancy status and more. Everyone benefits from the healthy omega-3 fatty acids in seafood, but the benefits are strongest for pregnant women, children and people with heart disease.

That’s why we created EWG’s BRAND-NEW Seafood Calculator and Good Seafood Guide – to help people like you shop for fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury, higher in omega-3 fatty acids and sustainably produced.

Click here to check out EWG’s Seafood Calculator and get your custom seafood list – based on your age, weight and health conditions.

This interactive tool offers people critical details about seafood safety – details that are missing from the draft guidance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency, which recently recommended that pregnant and nursing women increase their fish consumption to eight to 12 ounces of seafood per week and encouraged young children to eat fish twice a week.

EWG believes the FDA and EPA’s guidelines could lead some people to consume too much mercury, and others, too few omega-3s. EWG’s Good Seafood Guide and Calculator aim to fill in the gaps of the government's flawed advice and to help families determine how to get the most nutrition from seafood without risking their health.

Click here to check out EWG’s brand-new Seafood Calculator and get your personalized recommendations for more than 80 species of seafood!

EWG created this user-friendly tool to help consumers like you decide which seafood to eat, which to approach with caution and which to limit or avoid. I hope you’ll check it out and share this exciting tool with your friends and family.

Thanks for making this work possible, Sandra.

Sincerely, Renee Sharp - Director of Research, Environmental Working Group

From Environmental Working Group, Sept. 26th: Sandra, we did it!  Thank you for joining with thousands of other EWG activists in support of the Sunscreen Innovation Act. Because you spoke up, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate unanimously passed the bill.

This is huge, Sandra. Finally we may see more sunscreen ingredients – substances that have been used safely all over the world for years – introduced into the U.S. market.

Requiring the Food and Drug Administration to review sunscreen ingredients in a timely way is likely to give consumers like you access to the most up-to-date ways to protect your skin from cancer-causing UVA rays.

Thank you for your help in making this happen.

Sincerely, Scott Faber

Vice President of Government Affairs, Environmental Working Group

ENVIRONMENTAL UPDATES FROM THE U.S. EPA:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 8, 2014

EPA Seeks Feedback from the Public on Proposed Label Options for Safer Products
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is redesigning its Design for the Environment Safer Product Label to better convey to consumers that products bearing the label meet the program’s rigorous standard to be safer for people and the environment.

“We want consumers to be able to easily find safer products that work well,” said Jim Jones, Assistant Administrator for Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. “The agency wants to hear from the American people on which designs will help people identify household cleaning and other products that are safer for families and the environment.”

The redesigned label is intended to help consumers, businesses and institutional buyers recognize products that have earned the EPA Safer Product Label. All ingredients in products that earn the logo have undergone a thorough evaluation to ensure they meet high standards for safety and performance. When people use these products, they are protecting their families and the environment by making safer chemical choices.

Over the past 15 years, the voluntary EPA Design for the Environment (DfE) Safer Product Labeling Program has grown significantly. More than 2,500 products have earned the DfE label because they are formulated with the safest possible ingredients for human health and the environment based on the best available science and protective criteria. The program helps partners drive change by providingtechnical tools, methodologies, and expertise to move toward safer, more sustainable formulations.

The agency is also seeking input from a wide range of stakeholders, including the chemical and product manufacturing industry, retailers, consumers and environmental organizations. This input will help inform the agency’s selection of a new label.

Comment on the proposed designs up until October 31, 2014: http://www.epa.gov/dfe/label

SHARING EXPERIENCES:

Remember that eating our food intolerances can have a dramatic effect on our moods as well as other symptoms we discuss, ad infinitum.

OCTOBER THE MEMORABLE MONTH

By Sandra Strom, CEO of Song of Health

October is a memorable month for many reasons.  The obvious is Halloween and all that it offers, including tooth decay!  Celebrations of the autumn harvests are observed in both secular and spiritual circles.  National Hispanic Heritage Month is the period from September 15th to October 15th

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; it is also Children’s Health Month.

In Naturopathic circles, we take this time to emphasize the benefits of Thermography, the safe and most effective method for detecting changes in breast cancer tissue.  Thermograms are digital infrared images basically showing areas of heat and coolness in the body.  It is natural to produce heat in specific areas, such as under the arms; in the breast tissue the temperatures should be toward the cool side.  Unusual heat is detected in a thermogram, alerting to a potential, or already problematic area.    Dr. Tish wrote an excellent article in the October 2008 newsletter called “Breast Thermography” that explains how it works, why it is your best choice for early detection, and why mammograms are actually detrimental to your health.  I urge you to go back and read her article.  You can click on the link above and go directly to it if you are already logged in to SOH.

Children’s Health Month doesn’t get near the publicity that Breast Cancer Prevention does. If we give our children the best chance possible in their early formative years, does that not set them up for better lifetime opportunities?

From the research I’ve found on what Children’s Health Month is supposed to make us aware of, it appears the focus is on physical safety hazards, especially around the house.  It includes potentially dangerous consumer products; and hazardous areas, such as toilets and windows.  A child’s well-being also includes their mental and social condition.  “Most parents know the basics of keeping children healthy, like offering them healthy foods, making sure they get enough sleep and exercise and insuring their safety.” 1   My purpose is, obviously, to focus on the issue of healthy eating as preventative and maintenance care.  I am sure that, for most of you, I am preaching to the choir.  Otherwise, why would you be a Member of SOH, right?  I don’t think it hurts to remind each other, though, how we can watch out for the kids.  In our busy lives filled with stressful days, hours, and minutes, we often look for the easiest and fastest solutions to immediate situations.  It is often easier to hit the fast junk food arena (no matter how much McDonald’s or Wendy’s advertises to claim different) than it is to fix a healthy meal at the end of that long day.  To me, it’s equivalent to a pacifier!

There are so many benefits to a family sitting down together for that dinner meal in addition to eating tasty and healthy food.  This is no news flash…it has been discussed and broadcast hundreds of times.  Having a few family rules for dinnertime --- no cell phones, TV, games, toys, or other outside distractions --- offers that special time together as a unit that only sitting-around-the-table can do.  Make it a relaxing time that shows children how interested you are in their lives, no matter how exhausted you feel.  Listen to what they are saying and read between the lines.  Even their silence can tell you a lot.  What inner strength and character we can help develop in these precious young people with just a few valuable minutes dedicated to attention of the family health in all respects.  They may not show their appreciation immediately; soon they will come to expect it; later in life they will honor it!  What sweet memories can be created over dinner.  This, in turn, helps relieve some of the stress for all family members through the unity of support for each other.  Less stress = better health and happiness.

Let’s honor our children every day of every month, not just in October.

To All My Relations, Sandra

REMINDER: IMPORTANT!  Per the request of Dr. Zeff, we will continue to print this message in every newsletter from now on. It is an important issue that we believe needs to always be addressed:

On occasion, a Subscriber will ask our doctors a food intolerance question and their responses will slightly differ.  This has sometimes caused confusion and has been expressed directly to one of our doctors by several patients.

Per our doctors: “…most likely, we are not evaluating foods for, e.g., potato content.  We are evaluating a food for a person with a known potato intolerance…”  Results for one patient to a food can vary from another patient, even though they are intolerant to the same food category.  So, one doctor may determine a different result than any of the other doctors who competently perform this analysis, because they are evaluating for a patient’s specificity to a specific food sample.  “It is one of the peculiarities of the methodology.”

For this reason, we constantly emphasize throughout the Song of Health website that the information found on the website is a guide only.   If you have any personal issues with a product, in other words, an evaluation shows that a food should be OK for you to eat, yet you have a reaction to it anyway, we suggest you refrain from consuming it until you have it evaluated for you personally.

Always, always, always consult your physician with any medical issues you may be experiencing, any drugs you have questions about, or your medical care.  Our purpose is to help you to determine what foods are included in food intolerance categories.  All other information, including articles, are for educational purposes and is not meant to replace your doctor’s care for you.  We are set up as a support team for doctor, patient and Subscriber.  There are many questions Song of Health can answer for you, and we encourage you to ask us first, in regards to food and food intolerances.  All other medical discussions should be directed to your physician.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact us.  We are here to support you and your efforts to claim and maintain great health by refraining from your food intolerances. In Health, Sandra Strom

*About this month’s picture:  From the artist:  “The Painting "Feminine Wine" was inspired by a long process of searching for a design that would capture a vision in the mind of a close friend who was looking for a painting for her room and website. This wasn't the design that was chosen, but I was also very pleased with it so I decided to paint it for my own enjoyment. I have spent many years designing and painting custom artwork for people and take great joy in creating pieces that fit the person.”  Chelsea Stillman 208-755-3666
Editor’s Note:  She also designed Beyond Pink’s logo:

Beyondpink.net: Beyond Pink is the result of two women who wanted to celebrate the technology called Thermography and its powerful ability to aid in the early detection of breast disease. Their goal, was not just to raise awareness, but to help provide funding for women who could not otherwise afford this potentially lifesaving procedure.

About this logo ~ The green and pink colors are the Naturopathic community’s honoring representation, supporting thermography and other natural options for cancer prevention.

HOW TO READ THE FOOD RESOURCE LIST AND USE THE KEY:

* As items are submitted and analyzed by our staff doctors, they are then added to the Food Resource List on the Song of Health website. We compile the updated lists to email to you as well.

* The items are listed per category.

* By listing the “Date Evaluated” you can be assured of the most recent updates.

* Under the “Evaluated For” column, “ALL” signifies that the product has been analyzed for all food categories included in the Carroll Food Intolerance Evaluation Method.

In some cases, you will see ingredients listed in the “Results” column that are ot included in “Evaluated For.” This is due to: 1) the ingredient has been listed on the packaging; 2) or it is obviously in the stated category; 3) or our doctors evaluated for more than what was asked for. For example, results for milk will be “dairy (D).”

* Under “Purchased At” we no longer furnish where the product was purchased; however, if the product was purchased outside the Pacific Northwest area, the region will be noted.  Sometimes, I will be able to locate a place to purchase a product for you, if requested.
